Jan HST BOM 2014

Here at Last! The first Friday of the month - which means?

The Half Square Triangle Block of the Month is HERE!!!!

For January I have made a 18" (45.5cm) block that I call "Chip"

This was the design that I came up with and the picture on the right is the design in fabrics.

The small blocks are 3.5" and the large unfinished block is 18".

I decided to use the traditional method of joining two squares of fabric and sewing down opposite the middle and creating two 'hst' - (only because the strips of fabric I had were already 4.5" wide).

I decided to make my block "black & white", so I measured all my 4,5" squares, paired them up according to the numbering chart (found in instructions), drew my lines on each, sewed down both sides of line, cut on line, (phew, need a breath). Once those blocks were all cut to size - 3.5"(9cm) I laid them out to get a good visual of what I was doing ( I think it was more to prove that there was method in the madness LOL!) and then sewed those babies up to get my block.

This is the finished block for January
The block was not hard to make and the process is in the instructions.
All patterns can be found in my Craftsy Shop.

I'll be providing cutting measurements in the instructions for two different HST methods. Let's talk about both quickly:

1. Traditional Method - This seems to be the most common way to create HSTs. You start with two squares (1 background, 1 print), and place them right sides together. Using a ruler and pencil, you draw a line across the diagonal on the top square, sew 1/4" on either side of the line and finally cut on the line creating two HSTs.

2. Alternative Method - This method still uses two squares (1 background, 1 print), but they are larger.  You place them right sides together, and sew 1/4" all around all four sides. Using your ruler, but cut along both diagonals, creating four HSTs. I'll be sharing more about this method and photos later next month!

The method you choose to use is totally up to you! Both give you the same result, and you still have to trim using both methods!

Grab yourself a button - also in the HST page and join in the fun!
I hope that there will be others joining me on this venture. All you need to know can be found in the HSTBoM Page at the top of the blog.

Don't forget to post photos to our Flickr Group - button on sidebar. Thanks

Looks great Janeen. Unfortunately, I had to edit my page as my sidebar dropped to the bottom of the page and lost your link. Now I can't even get my linky party back up again. Grrr! Thanks for joining anyway. Hopefully next week I'll be able to get all things working as they should.
